Elle magazine and UNICEF Romania inaugurated the section for the new-born from Piatra Neamt maternity house.

Elle magazine and UNICEF Romania inaugurated on Friday, June 3, the section for the new-born from Piatra Neamt maternity house. The funds used to arrange the section were collected at the charity auction organized by Elle magazine in collaboration with UNICEF Romania, in November 2004.

The objects for the auction were donated by Romanian VIPs and they were bought for a total amount of 30.000 EURO: jewlery donated by the sopranoes Mariana Nicolesco and Angela Gheorghiu and by actrices Maia Morgenstern and Daniela Nane, manuscripts signed by Mircea Cărtărescu and Horia Roman Patapievici, the jacket weared by Ilie Nastase at Roland Garros in 1973, the typewriter and the fountain pen of Marius Tucă, and other art objects donated by Cesaria Evora, Andreea Raicu, Mihaela Geoană, Dana Năstase, Ioan Nemţoi, Agnes Toma, Alessandra Stoicescu.

Almost half of the total collected amount was donated by Mihaela Rădulescu. „ I have a very good reason to support this initiative of Elle magazine: my brother’s first child died ten years ago in the maternity house from Piatra Neamt because of the inadequate endowments”.

The money have been used for puchaising equipment and furniture, in order to create the "rooming-in" system in the maternity house, which means putting the baby next to the mother in the ward, immediately after birth. So, the mother and the baby will stay together 24 hours a day till getting out of the hospital.

The ELLE - UNICEF partnership refers to the modification of a maternity house in a real hospitable one, by improving the conditions and the climate when the mother and baby spend together a few days after birth. The equipment of a section for new-born with new furniture (beds for mother and new-born) represents a complementary effort to the Initiative "Baby Friendly Hospital".

The above mentioned maternity house collaborates with UNICEF Representation in Romania since March 2003, when the stuff expressed its desire to join the "Baby Friendly Hospital" initiative. During this cooperation, the doctors and nurses from Piatra Neamt showed dedication and devotion in increasing quality of the medical services for mother and baby, in spite of the economical difficulties.

Annually, 2300 babies are born in this maternity house and most of their parents have critical economical difficulties. The stuff of the maternity house is actively involved in the implementation of the required quality standards "Baby Friendly Hospital" and improving these conditions creates a real friendly atmosphere for mother and baby.

„The most important advantage is that the system encourages the breast feeding, providing adequate nutrition and, implicitly, a better development of the baby. More, it decreases the risc for the baby getting ill, because the baby comes in contact with a redus number of persons and is less exposed to infections. And, last but not least, it creates a strong bound between the mother and her baby starting with the first day of life, a bound that decreases the risc of giving up the baby in the maternity house. These are only few of the advantages of a system which has a very good influence on the mother too” declared Mr. Pierre Poupard, UNICEF Reprezentative for Romania.

On this occasion, Pampers donated 10 beds for new-born and swaddle tables in order to set up the wards in the „rooming-in” system. Pampers’ intiatives, which take place in June, the children’s month, with the purpose of improving the quality in baby carying, have already became a tradition. This year, Pampers will donate beds for the new-born and swaddle tables for 14 more maternity houses and, in this way, their number raises at 500 till now”, said Maria Camelia Sur - External Relationships Director for Procter&Gamble.
